What is Collections Release 2.0?
Collection Release 2.0 is a portal based solution proposed to be developed using MOSS 2007 on a .net platform.
Why Collections Release 2.0?
The current Collections Release 1. 0 is lotus notes client based and has less features to make it more sophisticated.
So, the need to make it Portal and web based is crucial for its success.
HexaCorp is planning to implement a portal solution using MOSS and .net platform to collaborate,
communicate and automate most of its business processes. HexaCorp is currently using a
"Lotus Notes/Domino" based system named "Collections" that is being mainly used by the Accounting and HR department.
The proposed "Collections Release2.0" will be a Portal based solution developed using Microsoft Share Point Server (MOSS) and .Net.
The main idea behind the development the portal based solution would be to allow the users to use a thin client like
Internet Explorer rather than using the thick clients like Lotus Notes. The proposed portal solution will be used companywide and aiming to
result in improved productivity, increased return on investment and allow the management to make informed decision by providing Strategic
analysis and reports.
Portal implementation for each of these functional areas will solve the current business issues for HexaCorp. Since Microsoft Office SharePoint Serer is the fastest growing portal technology in the history of Microsoft, we have decided to implement the solution using MOSS and .Net technology.
- The deliverable would be a fully functional Portal with the following functionality for the Finance, Accounting, HR, Technology and Training departments.
- Wikis
- Blogs
- Document Libraries
- Forms using InfoPath 2007
- Announcements
- Discussion Boards
- Email integration
- Work Flow processes
- BI Reporting
- Dashboard
- Pot casts
- HR Module
- CRM Module
- Invoicing
- Change Management
- MS Project Server Integration
- SLK implementation.
- Migration of existing data from the Lotus Notes based application to the new system in a SQL server database.
The main idea for developing the new system is to create a portal that would be used companywide to ensure better collaboration, communication and automation of business process to improve productivity.
The following are the key functionality that would be implemented in Collections Release 2. 0

Research & Study
During an average eight-hour workday, each individual spent about 45 minutes looking for information. For example, when asked by the client to retrieve a specific status report, the project coordinator had to look for it on the network share, in her email inbox, in the project folder of her computer, and she even had to call up another colleague to help her find it. This typical mode of searching took up time that could have been spent on something more productive. In addition, project resources were unproductive due to poor document management practices, inefficient project communication standards, and ineffective project collaboration tools.
According to a May 31st New York Times article titled, “Time Waster? Perhaps it’s Well Spent (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/31/fashion/31work.html) a Microsoft study found that American workers, on average spend 45 hours a week at work, with 16 of those hours described as "unproductive". Although 45 minutes may not sound a lot, when you look at the bigger picture, it essentially means that a team of 20 people wastes 900 minutes a day. In a three-month project, that is 54,000 minutes or roughly 38 personal days – more than one-third of the project. Other than time, it also cost so much to the organization
Being a technical solutions provider, HexaCorp clearly understands the need for the right solution to improve productivity and hence it has become imperative that a portal technology is much needed for a small to medium size organization’s internal use.
